Hernia repair surgery went well yesterday. I am quite reasonably comfortable as long as I behave myself. I had a good night last night. My back didn't like me sleeping flat on it so I came downstairs about 2:00, took two Ibuprofen and slept in my chair for a couple hours before taking some of my wonderful narcotics and toddling back upstairs. Life could be a lot worse.
The Compline reading for Friday is Psalm 88, arguably the most dismal of the Psalter. The only hopeful sign is that in the depths of his despair, the psalmist pours out his sorrow to the Lord instead descending into his own darkness.
As I read the Psalm last night it struck me that I was praying it for someone else. The psalmist was desperately sick and abandoned; I had had a very good day, surrounded by caring people and on the mend.
I had a good night indeed as I prayed that through my prayers someone else, unknown to me, might catch a glimmer of light in the love of God.
