What is the texture of wellness? What is the texture of Advent? Does the one have anything to say about the other?

Advent is about preparing for the coming of the Lord. The classic biblical text is Isaiah 40:3-5.

A voice of one calling: "In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

The texture of Advent is that of a straight, smooth road in a rough place. The prophet calls on us, the advance team, to prepare the way, but we quickly find out that it is the Lord himself who must do the heavy lifting.

Our job is the unglamorous work of getting our own clutter and rubbish out of the way so that God can make it happen. And we can't even do that much without help.

We do what we can. We wait with anticipation, we trust, we pray.

That sounds a lot like the texture of wellness.

So be it. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus, into the rough places of my life.
